Vallo Captures Robbie Dean "Big Bird 94" at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - Formerly known as the Dayton 100 Kil-Kare Speedway officials renamed the event the Robbie Dean "Big Bird 94" in honor and memory of long time competitor Dean who passed away recently as a result of cancer. The event was sponsored by USG building materials with fine trophies supplied by Renner Racing, Don and Kelly Renner. John Vallo of Fairborn of captured the event in the Gary Estes owned Weiler Welding machine.

In tribute to Robbie Dean his former mount, the #77 late model driven tonight by Mike Stacy and Donnie Renner who replaced his 7 with a 94, Robbie's long time number paced the field for the 94 lap feature for a couple of laps as the fans stood and waved to the field.

Mike Stacy and Chad Poole made up the front row for the start with Stacy in Dean's old car taking the lead with John Vallo in second but Charlie Davis spun on turn two making for a complete restart. Again Stacy took the lead with Vallo second and Poole third but Poole slip on turn one dropping back to fifth. Vallo stole the lead on lap four as Donnie Renner was running third being challenged by Justin Alsip. Vallo continued to pull away from the field but the real battle was for third on back. Alsip took over third with Tim Allensworth fourth and Renner fifth. Allensworth took third from Alsip on lap sixteen as Vallo was busy lapping traffic.

Vallo had a half lap lead by lap twenty five. Scott Drake moved into fifth on lap twenty six as Vallo was flat flying around the track. Alsip spun on the frontstretch on lap thirty five to bring out the second caution erasing Vallo's large lead with Stacy, Allensworth, Drake and Joe Hill the top five. Vallo set sail as Allensworth challenged Stacy for second but Stacy kept shaking him off as Allensworth looked at Stacy's yellow rear bumper. Allensworth tried the outside lap after lap as the third caution came out when fourth place running Scott Drake spun on the frontstretch. At the halfway it was Vallo, Stacy, Allensworth, Drake and Hill as the fourth caution came out when four cars were involved in a mix-up on turn four.

After the restart Allensworth slipped by Stacy on the frontstretch to take second as he set his sights on Vallo. Joe Hill challenged Drake for fourth making his pass good on lap fifty eight only to spin on the backstretch as Hill headed to the pits which put Drake back in fourth and Heckman into fifth. The top five continued to run that way  with Justin Alsip trying to pass Renner for seventh. The yellow flew again on lap sixty-five when Heckman and Virgil Powell bumped with Powell spinning on turn two. Vallo continued to set sail but Stacy put the pressure on Allensworth for second. Powell again was the victim when Justin Alsip tapped him and again Powell spun on turn two for another caution.

Vallo appeared to be slowing as Allensworth moved up on his rear bumper as the laps were winding down. Lap eighty two saw the yellow fly again as Powell spun by himself on the backstretch. Donnie Renner was up to fourth on the restart but this time Vallo took off again to pull away but Stacy was right behind Allensworth and with five to go it was Vallo, Allensworth, Stacy, Renner, and Hill and that is the way they crossed the line at the finish.

For Vallo it was his sixth win of the year and his third in a row.

The first heat of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models saw Sam Heckman and Scott Drake in the front row with Heckman in front as Justin Alsip slipped up to second followed by fast timer John Vallo with Tim Allensworth right behind making it a four car battle for the lead with Heckman taking the win with Alsip just nipping Vallo for second with Alsip third and Allenswoth fourth.

Ricky Bates and Russ Bobb started in the front row in the second heat with Bates jumping out front followed by Virgil Powell and Joe Hill with Hill dogging Powell. Bates claimed his third heat win of the season with Powell second with Hill right on his bumper for third and fourth was Bobb.

Chad Poole and Bill Burba set the pace for the thirty lap modified feature with Poole taking the lead with Burba second and Shane Shirk and Dick Dunlevy side by side for third. Shirk took third as Dunlevy dropped back in line in fourth and Shirk tried the inside of Burba but had to back off. Jack Jones held down fifth running right behind Dunlevy. The caution came out on lap seven when Rodney Kreusch's car sent up a cloud of white smoke. Poole maintained the lead after the restart but Burba was right on his rear bumper with fast timer Shirk riding third. At the halfway point it was Poole, Burba, Shirk, Dunlevy and Jones the top five. The top three ran almost bumper to bumper as Shirk tried the inside of Burba as they ran side by side and Burba powered to the outside of Poole but Poole kept shaking him off. At the checker it was Poole claiming his fourth win. It was Shirk darting inside to take second dropping Burba to third with Dunlevy fourth and Jones fifth.

The first heat of modifieds had Jerry Stapleton and Jason Mahaffey leading the pack with one handed driver Stapleton taking the lead followed by Mahaffey and Ralph Harrod. Dick Dunlevy moved up to fourth with fast timer Shane Shirk right behind. At the checker it was Stapleton taking his second heat win of the year with Mahaffey second followed by Harrod and Dunlevy.

It was Jamie Brenneman and Caleb Reschar in the front row of the second heat with lady driver Brenneman taking the lead over Reschar. Brenneman held on to claim her third win of the season with Reschar a close second. Shawn Stroble was third and Chad Poole fourth.

The sport stock feature had Steve Salyers and Mike South Jr. leading the field to Mike Stapleton's green flag with both running side by side for the lead with Salyers barely out front. Fast timer Tom Williams was on the move taking over second spot and then went to work on leader Salyers. Williams tried every way to make a pass with  Williams tapping the leader on turn four with Slayers spinning on turn four and Williams sent to the tail. Salyers continued to lead but this time it was Mike South Jr. dogging him. South charged to the outside as the laps wound down and Williams was rapidly moving toward the front. Salyers had the misfortune of making contact with a lapped car and ended up spinning on turn two. Salyers went to the tail and South inherited the lead with Williams in second and Roger Gillespie third. South took the win, his second of the year with Williams a close second with Gillespie third. Scott Allen was fourth and fifth was Keith Bales.

The first heat of sport stocks were led to the start line by Travis Diggs and Mike South Jr. with South taking the lead with Diggs second and fast timer Tom Williams running third. Williams shot on the inside of Diggs for second but it was South taking the win with Williams second, Diggs third and Steve Slayers fourth. David James and Scott Allen brought the field to tithe line in the second heat as James took the lead with Allen second. Mel McMullen moved up on the leaders and powered to the outside as he tried tot catch tithe leaders. David James in his first appearance at Kill-Kare took the win with Allen second, McMullen third, and Roger Gillespie fourth.

Troy Patterson and Mike Robertson started on the front of the first heat of Oakley Blacktop compacts with Patterson taking the lead from Robertson with a battle for third between Ron Sager and Chris Boggs. It was a three wide start in the second heat with David Boyle emerging the leader with Steve Barnhart second and Dave Sagers third. Boyles took the win with Barnhart second followed by David Sagers and Aaron Harshbarger

It was Bryan Lynch and Bo Hoelscher leading the fifteen car compact field with Lynch having a slight lead but Hoelscher took over with Tim Haerr and Chris bogs racing side by side for third. Hoelscher set the pace but Haerr took over second with Boggs in third as they stretched out back behind them Ron Sagers and Aaron Harshbarger made up the top five. Hoelscher enjoyed a sizeable lead as he approached slower traffic and began lapping cars. Boggs and Sagers had a hot battle for third. Haerr was closing in on Hoelscher when the white flag waved but it was Hoelscher taking his fourth feature win of the year. Haerr wasn't far behind for second with Boggs third, Sagers fourth and Harshbarger fifth.
