by Jerry Wahl Alsip Takes Late Model Feature at Kil-Kare Hahn ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Winner
Xenia, OH - (7/11) - Virgil Powell got the jump at the start from his pole position starting slot of the thirty lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature with Ricky Bates second as the first caution came out on lap two when Donnie Renner slid sideways and stopped on turn three. Apparently something broke on Renner's mount as he was towed to the pits. On the restart Powell continued to set the pace but sixth place starter Justin Alsip was up to third with seventh place starter Tim Allensworth fourth. The second caution flew on lap three when seventh place running Bobby Justus spun on turn one with his car eliminated. After the restart Alsip went to work on Bates to pass him and then whizzed by Powell for the lead on lap six. Allensworth was next to pass Powell as he took over second and then here came John Vallo for the tail to take third. Vallo then continued to close in on Allensworth as Alsip continued to lead at the half way point. Allenswoth moved up on the tail end of alsip as they lapped traffic but Alsip continued to set the pace with ten laps to go. Back in the pack Powell had his hands full holding off Joe Hill who finally passed Powell for fifth. The third caution came out with four laps to go when Powell spun on turn two. When the green waved again Alsip had his hands full as Allensworth was coming on the outside as the white flag waved Alsip in his Charlie's A-1 Auto Service special claimed his second win of the year. Allensworth claimed runner-up money with Vallo in his back up car claiming third. Hill was fourth and Don Mahaffey came from tenth to claim fifth. Eddie Simpson and Ricky Bates showed the way to the green in the first heat of the late model first heat. Bates shot into the lead with Sam Heckman and Simpson fighting for second. Tim Allensworth came from the tail to steal third from Heckman. Allensworth then nipped Simpson at the line for second. for Bates it was his second heat win of the year as Allensworth as stated was second with Simpson third and Justin Alsip fourth. The second heat saw Joe Hill and Bobby Justus in the front row with Hill taking the lead followed by Justus and Virgil Powell. John Vallo, in his back-up car started on the tai and came on strong to overtake Powell for third. When the checker waved it was Hill taking his first heat win of the year. Justus was second with Vallo third and Powell fourth. The modifieds were on the track for their first heat with first timer John Lawhorn and Jason Mahaffey on the front row. Lawhorn, a long time known dirt track driver got the quick lead with Mahaffey riding second and Josh Smith third . Former track champ Mike Carroll tried the outside of Smith but could not pull off the pass to finish in that order, Lawhorn, Mahaffey, Smith, and Carroll. The second heat had Grant Gamble and Jimmy Johnson bringing the field to the line. Johnson took the lead as Terry Humphrey moved into second to be challenged by Shawn Stroble. On lap four Humphrey, the defending track champ took the lead with Stroble challenging on the outside. Humphrey, making his first appearance of the year took the win with Stroble second. George Lindsay came from seventh to claim third and fourth was Caleb Reschar. Twenty one modifieds started their thirty lap feature with Rob Yelton and Bill Burba in the front row. Burba edged ahead but Yelton tried to come back alongside of Burba but the caution came out on lap three when amie Brenneman spun on turn four. Burba continued to lead on the restart with the Yelton brothers, Rob and Brad right behind but again the yellow flew. Burba pulled away on the restart as the Yelton's battled side by side with Rob taking second but again the caution flew when Jason Mahaffey hit the turn two wall and was out of action. Burba again set the pace but back in the pack Mike Carroll was moving up as he passed Josh Smith for sixth as fast timer Greg Stapleton was running fourth. Shawn Stroble,who brought the yellow out then departed to the pits. With ten laps in Burba again maintained control on the restart. Carroll then moved alongside Stapleton to take fourth as he set sail on the Yelton's. Carroll then passed Rob for third with Stapleton taking fourth. Again the yellow flew when Jack Jones hit the frontstretch wall and was put out of action. With five laps to go Burba still had a good lead with the first six cars running fairly close together. With two laps to go the caution came out for oil on the track. It was about to be a shoot out to the checker but the caution flew again due to a spin on turn three. Burba survived all the cautions to take his first feature win of the year in his Westchester Permit Service machine. Brad Yelton held on for second with Carroll third, Josh Smith fourth and Greg stapleton fifth. First heat of the Oakley Blacktop Compacts had Davey Shaw and Jess Drook on the front row and when the green waved they battled side by side with Drook finally shaking Shaw loose. Joshua Spriggs charged up to second as Drook scored his second heat win of the year. Following second place finisher Spriggs was Chris Boggs and Bryan Lynch. Steve Barnhart took the lead at the drop of the green only to tangle with Chris Clark to bring out the caution. Barnhart was eliminated and on the restart Troy Patterson charged into the lead for his first heat win of the year as David Sagers finished second with Paul Holley right on Sagers tail for third and Joe Hoelscher was fourth. Bryan Lynch and David Lucas brought the twenty car compact field to the line for their feature with the yellow wav ing on the first lap making for a complete restart. Lynch shot into the lead as last time winner chris boggs took over second as Tim Haerr and Bo Hoelscher were on th emovve as Hoelscher took over fourth withBoggs began to lap traffic by ap seven as Haerr had moved into fourth and then moved on the inside of Rbertson for third. Boggs had a good lead but Haer moved into second as he tried to catch the leader as the laps wound down. Boggs held the lead to claim his second win of the year with Haerr second, Ron Sagers third, Bo Hoelscher fourth, and Jess Drook fifth. First time visitor Don Hall and Mel McMullen brought the sport stocks to the green in their twenty lap feature. Hall took the lead for the first two laps but then Derrick Loudderback took over as Hall fell back to fifth. Fast timer Tom Williams then moved up to challenge Louderback as he inched closer and closer to the leader with Justin Miller right behind. Williams, in his Muffler Brothers of Xenia sponsored car slipped under Louderback going into turn one on lap seven to take the lead. Miller then was sizing up Louderback with Mike South Jr. right behind him as the trio ran bumper to bumper. Williams continued to set the pace to the checker to claim his third feature of the season. Louderback was able to hang on to finish second with Miller third followed by South and McMullen. ln the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series 100 lap feature Bill Withers and Mark Otting brought the field to the green flag with Withers taking the lead but the caution came out with a mix-up on turn three causing a complete restart. Withers again took the lead with the caution coming out again when two trucks tangled on turn one. With one lap in the green then restarted the field Withers stayed out front but Otting tried to challenge nut failed. Nick Gullatta came on strong to take over second followed by Mike Young. Gullatta took the lead on lap ten with Young right behind with Withers running third. Lap nineteen when Dan Short brought the caution out when his truck caught fire which was quickly put out. Gullatta stayed out front on the restart one lap later the caution came out when Kurt McLennan spun on turn four. At twenty five laps it was Gullatta, Young, Withers, Duane Bischoff, and Norm Weaver. The caution came back out on lap thirty-two when Kenny Kirsch and Kurt McLennan spun on turn four. When the green came back out it was still Gullatta and Young holding down the first two spots followed by Withers, Hahn and Weaver. Eighth place starter Ron Wells was up to fifth but had the misfortune of spinning on turn two on lap thirty-four. Gullatta had the misfortune of having his hood to start to come loose as Young battled him on the outside finally taking the lead on lap forty four. At the halfway mark it was Young, Gullatta, Hahn, Withers, and Weaver. Hahn moved into second with Gullatta running third and Withers fourth. The caution came out on lap sixty when two trucks spun on turn two. Young had fast timer Hahn on his rear bumper on the restart with Gullatta still third. One lap later Robin Slaughter brought the yellow out when he spun on turn one. Ron Wells was on the move from his earlier tailend restart to move up to third by lap sixty five. Young had a little distance over Hahn as Wells was moving closer and closer to the leaders when Weaver stopped on the backstretch. At the same time Wells spun on turn one and was sidelined with mechanical problems. Hahn tried to pull alongside of Young to make a pass as they ran side by side. Hahn make his pass good on lap seventy-four as Young dropped back a little. Withers was still running third with Kirsch now fourth and Gullatta fifth. Lap seventy seven saw the yellow fly again to slow the field with Withers and Kirsch sent to the tail. Kirsch again brought the yellow out when he spun on turn four. Hahn continued to set the pace on the restart with Young second followed by Gullatta, Slaughter, and Weaver. When the white flag waved it was still Hahn in the lead in his Hahn's Powder Coating-Fox Auto Part-Howe Racing Chevy '07 Colorado of Canton, Michigan who went on to claim the win, his fifth of the year. Young was second with Gullatta third with Slaughter fourth and Weaver fifth. Next Friday night Kil-Kare will host Open Wheel Friday featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, AMS Modifieds, Buckeye Winged Sprint Cars, KOIL Thunder Roadsters, and the vintage cars of the Vintage American Race Cars. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
