Mahaffey Rules Kil-Kare Again by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH (7/30) - It was USG night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway which saw Dayton's Don Mahaffey continue his dominance as he claimed his ninth late model feature of the year making it a clean sweep for the Oakley Blacktop cars as Mike Stacy and Jason Mahaffey, also in Oakley cars placed second and third. Teammates Mike Stacy and Don Mahaffey led the field to the green with Mahaffey jumping out front with Stacy second and Jason Mahaffey third with Oakley Blacktop cars holding the top three spots. New track record holder Sloan Henderson was riding fourth when on lap four Ray Muncy spun on turn one and Terry Scherz brushed the turn one wall but was able to continue. Mahaffey again set sail on the restart with a real battle for the rear of the field cars of Terry Scherz, Ray Muncy, Bob Sibila, and Russ Bobb. The caution flew again on lap twelve when Ray Muncy, Bob Sibila and Russ Bobb spun on turn four. Again the field bunched up for the restart and again Mahaffey took off leaving Stacy, Jason Mahaffey, Sloan Henderson and Bobby Justus to fend for themselves. As the laps wore down Mahaffey moved into traffic and Sibilia retired to the infield. Mahaffey continued lapping cars as he still stretched his lead and claimed his ninth feature of the year with the Oakley cars claiming the top three spots with Mike Stacy secBond and Jason Mahaffey third. Sloan Henderson wound up fourth and Bobby Justus fifth. The Sonic Drive-In late model first heat was led to the green by Matt Parsons and Bobby Justus with Justus taking the lead followed by Parsons and Mike Stacy. Stacy took second and set sail for leader Justus while Gary Estes held fourth position. Justus held on to claim the win with Stacy second, Parsons third and Estes fourth. Tony Brunke and Russ Bobb started on the front row of the second heat and when the green flew it was Brunke surging into the lead with Bob Sibila into second with Terry Scherz and Sam Heckman battling for fourth when Heckman slowed. Sibila chased down leader Brunke as he tried the outside but Brunke took the win with Sibilia second and Scherz a very close third with Russ Bobb fourth. Caleb Reschar and Travis Braden led the pack to the green in the modified feature only to see the caution fly calling for a restart. Reschar got the lead with fast timer Greg Stapleton moving into second with Braden third and Brian Reeser in fourth when Ray Muncy spun on turn one when Muncy and Shawn Stansell bumped with one lap completed. Both Muncy and Stansell were sent to the rear of the field but action was halted when rain drops started to fall. Unfortunately the rain forced the feature to be called off and will be completed in two weeks with the field locked in as they were running on lap one. Ryan Fleming and Shawn Stansell were the pace setters in the first modified heat with Flyin' Ryan taking the lead over Stansell, Brian Reeser and Brandon Oakley. Fleming put a little distance on the field as Reeser tried the outside of Stansell to no avail as the white flag flew with Fleming taking the checker first followed by Stansell, Reeser, and Oakley. Veteran Darrel Skaggs and Grant Gamble were in the front row of the scond heat but it was Darrel Skaggs taking the lead as Jerry Stapleton moved up to challenge Skaggs. Stapleton took the lead on lap four but here came Gary Eaton into second and Ray Muncy third. Stapleton held the front spot for the win with Eaton second followed by Ray Muncy and Darrel Skaggs. Twenty five laps faced the sport stocks for their feature with Heat winner Joe Hensel on the pole with Shawn Stansell alongside. Stansell got the jump with fast timer Travis Digges challenging Hensel for second but James Harding zipped into third with Ron Lewis passing Digges who slipped back to fifth. Stansell continued to lead but Hensel was not far behind while back in the field Jay Lakins Jr. and Chris Boggs battled for eighth. Stansell was looking for his third feature win but one time winner Hensel was within striking distance. On lap fourteen Hensel lost control coming out of turn four and did a 360 and kept right on racing as he fell back to ninth leaving Stansell with a good lead over now second pace running Harding. Stansell and his Affordable Auto Parts special did claim their third feature of the season with Harding second followed by Lewis, Digges, and Jamie Sites. Sport stock first heat was led to the green by Ron Lewis and James Harding in the front row with Harding holding the lead down the backstretch but Lewis ran right alongside of him finally taking the lead on lap three. Joe Hensell then moved past Harding to challenge Lewis with Hensell showig as the leader on the white flag lap. It was Hensell taking the win with Lewis second and Shawn Stansell just slipping by Harding for third with Harding fourth. It was Will Gregory and Jay Lakins Jr. in the front row of the second heat with Lakins taking command as fourth place starter Jamie Sites advanced to seccond and then went to work on Lakins. Side by side they ran with neither driving giving an inch but it was Sites finally taking the point while Chris Boggs moved up to challenge Lakins for second. Sites took the win with Boggs stealing second followed by Lakins and will Gregory. Chris Linley and Gerald Miller led the FAST legend cars to the green in their feature with Miller in the lead down the backstretch but by the time they reached the frontstretch it was Bryan Nuckles taking the lead and pulling away from the pack. Fast timer Travis Braden was running second with Linley third and Heath Tatman fourth when the yellow flew for a spinning car. The restart gave Braden a chance to challenge Nuckles for the lead but just after the green flew Joey Greening and Kevin Donahue tangled on the backstretch slowing the field again. Nuckles had his hands full with Braden knocking on his rear bumper as he tried to unseat Nuckles as Braden tried the inside but Nuckles shook him off and again the yellow flew as Shelby Campbell spun on turn four. Again Braden was on Nuckles rear bumper and now Kyle Baugh joined the front runners as he ran third and Heath Tatman fourth. As the hard running Nuckles and Braden were dogging each other Braden made contact with Nuckles with Nuckles spinning on the backstretch with both cars sent to the tail which now saw Baugh in the lead. Baugh set the pace but Braden was on the move as he was up to second on the white flag lap with Nuckles right behind. At the checker it was Baugh the winner with Braden on his bumper in second with third going to Tatman followed by Nuckles and Joey Greening. Heath Tatman and Kyle Baugh led the field in the FAST legend cars first heat with Baugh taking the lead as Braden and Bryan Nuckles battled for third with Tatman running second. The top four cars ran bumper to bumper with a little e bumping going on. Baugh held the spot to take the win with Tatman taking second by inches over Braden who was third. Justin Campbell and Kevin Donahue were the leaders of the pack in the second heat with Campbell getting the lead on a very slow green flag start. Donahue was not far behind in second with Denny Andrews running third and Shelby Campbell fourth. Donahue tried to make a pass on turn four but Justin Campbell held on for the win followed by Kevin Donahue, Denny Andrews, and Shelby Campbell. The next to last event of the night was the twenty lap compact feature which had Paul Holley and Joe Hoelscher in the front row. Holley was looking for his first feature win and for Hoelscher it was win number four he was seeking. Holley enjoyed the lead at the start with Bryan Lynch challenging when he slid off the track into the infield leaving Joe hoelscher and Bo Hoelscher now challenging Holley. Bo passed dad Joe for second and went after leader Holley with Joe still in hot pursuit. It was a real battle for the front three spots as Holley woud not give up the lead with the Hoelscher's right behind. Bo Hoelscher slipped on the inside off Holley for the lead and then with three laps to go Holley and Hoelscher tangled with Bo sideways and the caution in the air and Holley was sent to the tail. Now Bo Hoelscher was in the lead on the restart with Tyler Mahaffey now second and Joshua Spriggs in third. At the checker it was Bo Hoelscher claiming his fourth win of the year. rookie tyler Mahaffey was home second followed by Joshua Spriggs, Paul Holley, and Dewayne Snyder Jr. The always wild and exciting compacts had Bo Hoelscher and Tyler Mahaffey on the front row of the first heat with Hoelscher beating rookie Mahaffey for the lead as Paul Holley jumped into second as Mahaffey faded. Fast timer Bryan Lynch moved into third followed by Joe Hoelscher. Bo held on to the lead to take the win with Holley second just beating Lynch to the line who was third with Joe Hoelscher fourth. It was Steve Barnhart and Dewayne Snyder Jr. on the front row of the second heat as they diced for position only to see the caution fly when Bradley Adkins got sideways going into the first turn making a restart necesary. Barnhart got the lead but Adkins slipped by him for the front spot as Joshua Spriggs moved into second with david Sagers shooting up to third. Adkins continued to lead when Sagers slipped off the backstretch bringing out the caution on and when the green flew again lap four Adkins stayed in front to claim his first heat win of the year followed by Spriggs, David Sagers and Dewayne Snyder Jr. Next Friday night Kil-Kare will present the annual Robbie Dean Memorial 94 lap late model feature along with modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
