Mahaffey, Stapleton, Stansell, and Hoelscher Rule Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. - As they say a full moon usually causes problems and that was certainly the case Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway as there was a bundle of caution periods and crashed race cars. When evverything settled down for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events it was Don Mahaffey, Greg Stapleton, Shawn Stansell and Bo Hoelscher taking the feature wins. Starting the nights action was the compacts with rookie Michael Brewer sitting on the pole and David Sagers alongside. Brewer jumped out front with David Sagers running second while Davey Shaw held third. Battling side by side behind them was Bo Hoelscher and Joe Holescherr with Bo sliding around Shaw on lap six. Brewer continued to set the pace as the field closed the gap on the leader. Bo shot to the outside of Brewer on lap eleven to steal the lead as dad Joe Hoelscher moved into second followed by Bryan Lynch who took third only to see the caution come out when he and Brewer made contact and Lynch spun. With Bo Hoelscher in the lead when the green reappeared it was shaping up for a showdown between son and father as son Bo lead father Joe as they moved side by side to the checker and it was Bo taking his second win of the year with Joe Hoelscher second and a very close third was Bryan Lynch with David Sagers ffourth and fifth was Paul Holley.
In the open-wheeled modifieds Caleb Rescher and rookie Brandon Oakley were in the front row for their thirty lap feature. Reschar beat the rookie into turn one to lead as Shawn Stansell moved to the inside of Oakley to battle for second. Jason Mahaffey was glued to the rear of the two when there was contact between Jerry Stapleton and Ralph Harrod with Harrod smacking the wall with flames shooting from the engine which quickly went out and put Harrod out for the night. The green flew again with three laps completed and Jason Mahaffey moving up to challenge Oakley for third with eight time fast timer Greg Stapleton riding fifth. Only six more laps were completed when Jack Jones and Derek Barnette made contact on turn four bringing out the caution for the second time with Barnette sent to the trailer with y damage. Again Mahaffey went to work on Oakley after the restart to take third with Stapleton also challenging Oakley only to have the third caution come out when second place running Shawn Stansell spun on the frontstretch after being tapped by Oakley. Reschar held the lead on the restart but Stansell was reeling him in but here came Stapleton passing Mahaffey for third and then pulled alongside of Stansell dropping him to third. Next for Stapleton was Reschar who he passed with five laps to go and pulled away. Reschar had his hands full as Mahaffey and Stansell were looking for a way around Reschar when Stansell bumped and spun Reschar for the fourth caution which put Stansell on the tail. Ryan Fleming now joined the front runnerrs riding fourth as Stapleton claimed his fourth feature in his Terry's Radiator Service special with Reschar second followed by Mahaffey, Fleming and Jack Jones. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In feature it was visiting Bob Sibila Jr and former champ Gary Estes in the front row as they diced side by side into turn one with Estes taking ehe lead with Sam Heckman in second. But here came seventh place starter and fast timer Don Mahaffey to take the lead on lap five. Estes held second but here came Mahaffey's teammate Mike Stacy to challenge Estes for second. Heckman held fourth but Sloan Henderson rode on the outside of him to steal the spot on lap ten. Mahaffey pulled way ahead of the field as Stacy tried to catch him and Mahaffey began to lap the field at the halfway mark. Mahaffey continued to set sail putting him almost a half lap ahead of second running Stacy. When the checker waved it was Mahaffey staking claim to his fourth feature win in his Oakley Blacktop special with four time winner Mike Stacy second with Sloan Henderson third followed by Bob Sibila and Sam Heckman. It was evident earlier in the evening that there was a full moon during sport stock hot laps as three cars were eliminated when one car blew an engine oiling the track and two cars smacked the outside wall Rounding out the night was the sport stocks with second generation driver Jay Lakins Jr. on the pole with John Haney on the outside. Before a lap could be completed David Boyle suffered mechanical problems as he came to a halt on turn four. Lakins took the lead at the drop of the green with Haney riding second with James Harding on the move on the outside to chase leader Lakins with fast timer Shawn Stansell following him as the front cars batled for positions. Two time winner Harding was challenged every lap by Stansell with Stansell moving up on the outside to run side by side but Harding kept shaking him off as the laps ran down. Who will it be to the stripe was anybody's guess as they diced back and forth. Harding slipped a little on turn four with five laps to go which saw Stansell take the lead. Meanwhile Jamie Sites passed Lakins for third as the white flag waved. Stansell was home first to claim his second feature win in his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored car. Harding was second with Sites third, Lakins fourth, and Haney fifth. Kil-Kare will celebrate the 4th of July with championship events in all the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
