Mahaffey Makes it Eleven Wins Friday at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. - Kil-Kare Speedway dropped the curtain on the 2010 NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series Friday night with the final feature checker
flags going to Donnie Mahaffe in the Sonic Drive-In late models, Jason
Mahaffey in the modifieds, Ed Lorentz in the sport stocks, and Bryan
Lynch in the compacts. With this also being the last points race of the
season Don Mahaffey will reign as the late model champion, Greg
Stapleton in the modifieds, James Harding in the sport stocks, and Joe
Hoelscher as the compact champion.
Leading the field to the green in the late model feature for the final
time this year was Tony Brunke and Bobbie Justus who were looking for
their first feature win of the year. When starter Mike Stapleton waved
the green it was Justus shooting into the lead but her on the outside
cameJason Mahaffey to move to the outside of Justus and stole the lead
on lap four. Right behind and on the move was David Carter as he took
second with points leader Don Mahaffey chasing Carter and Mike Stacy
passed Justus for fouth. Unfortunate for Carter, Stacy made contact with
him with Carter hitting the outside wall and Stacy disqualified for
unsportsman conduct. Carter then took over the wheel of Bobby Justus'
car and was allowed to restart in second.
Jason continued to lead but Donnie Mahaffey passed Carter for second
on the restart and then passed his brother Jason for the lead. Carter
rode a close third with Tony Brunke and Sam Heckman running bumper to
bumpter in fourth and fifth. Carter tried the outside of Jason at the
halfway but the caution flew when Andy Peterson spun.
The field then ran bunched up but it was Donnie as he usually does,
pulling away from the field but Jason began to move up on Donnie with
Carter right along with him. With five laps to go Donnie opened up a
sizeable lead over the field in his Oakley Blacktop machine and he went
on to score his eleventh feature win. Jason Mahaffey in another Oakley
car was second with Carter right on his bumper in third with Sam Heckman
just edging Tony Brunke for fourth and Brunke fifth. Rounding out the
field was Terry Scherz, Russ Bobb, Jeff Marsh, Andy Peterson, Andy
Peterson Bobby Justus, and Mike Stacy.
Brad Williams and Jason Mahaffey were the front row starters in the
modified feature and when the green flew Williams had a sight edge over
Mahaffey with Brian Reeser slipping up on the inside of Mahaffey to
battle him for second. Previous weeks winner Brandon Oakley was on the
move as he took the outside lane to pass Williams for second as Mahaffey
had taken the lead earlier. As Oakley was sizing up Mahaffey fast
timer Derek Weatherhead had moved into third and up front Oakley moved
to the outside of leader Mahaffey as they diced for the win. Side by
side they ran with Mahaffey holding a very slight lead as it was the
veteran against the rookie.
With slower traffic in front of them Mahaffey still held the lead with
Oakley right on his bumper with five laps to go. A battle for fourth was
between Reeser and Steve Foster with Foster taking the point as Mahaffey
scored his first win of the season in a great season closer. Second was
Brandon Oakley, third Derek Weatherhead, fourth Steve Foster, and fifth
was Brian Reeser. Rounding out the field was Travis Braden, Ryan
Fleming, Jerry Stapleton, Caleb Reschar, Joe Jennings, Brad Williams,
Ray Muncy, Rodney Kreusch, Rob Garrett, and Shawn Stansell.
Double duty driver Rodney Kreusch and Ed Lorentz started on the fornt
row of the sport stock feature as the cars ran side by side numerous
laps. Kreusch finally took the lead but the clock caught him as he was
well under his qualifying time and delegated to the tail. Lorentz found
himself in the lead with John Haney in second with Donnie Gregory Jr.,
running third. Fourth was Shawn Stansell with Ron Lewis fifth and points
leader James Harding running a cautious sixth.
At the halfway it was still Lorentz out front as the caution flew when
second place running Haney spun on turn one. Stansell, with four wins to
his credit then went to work on leader Lorentz but Lorentz kept shaking
him off. With the white flag in the air Lorentz had a three car lead
over Stansell as they lapped traffic and when the checker waved it was
Lorentz claiming his first win of the year with Stansell home second
followed by Ron Lewis, Donnie Gregory Jr., Jay Lakins Jr., Bruce Snider,
David Boyle. Brian Rauch, and Rodney Kreusch.
It was the last Friday night race for the compacts which saw Ivin
Fugate and Davey Shaw starting in the front row. Fugate took the early
lead with Jim McElfrish second with fast timer Bryan Lynch in tow.
McElfrish took the front spot with Lynch going to the outside to take
the lead on lap eight. Back in the pack Paul Holley was challenging
Dewayne Snyder Jr. for fourth and did so on lap twelve. The caution then
flew on lap thirteen when Davey Shaw coasted to a stop on the
frontstretch enabling the field to bunch up behind the front cars.
Lynch in quest of his fourth win of the year continued to lead after
the green reappeared while rookie Tyler Mahaffey was working his way up
on the outside on Holley but Holley shook him off as Holley shot into
third as the white flag came out and then the checker to Bryan Lynch
followed by Jim McElfrish, Paul Holley, Ivin Fugate, Tyler Mahaffey,
DeWayne Snyder Jr., Steve Barnhart, Davey Shaw, Jamie Sites, and Bo
Hoelscher.
