Xenia, OH (5/13) - Usually Friday the 13th is an unwelcome oman but it
proved to be a lucky night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
drivers at Kil-Kare Speedway as the weather was favorable and the track
was able to put their third racing program in the books. For drivers
Brandon Oakley, Greg Stapleton, Shawn Stansell, Matt Stone, and Trey
Craig it was a good night as they won their features.
Hitting the track for the 30 lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
thirty lap feature it was many time track champ Dick Dunlevy on the pole
with young sixteen year old Brandon Oakley alongside. Oakey took the
front spot with teammate Don Mahaffey in second with Dunlevy third but
here came fast timer Travis Braden to challenge Dunlevy. Braden pulled
alogside and passed Dunlevy on lap six but Dunlevy tried to come back,
however Braden was on a mission as he went to work on second place
running Mahaffey and passed him on lap eleven.
Meanwhile Oakley enjoyed a great lead as Braden in the former Sloan
Henderson driven car was inching closer and closer to the leader. It was
still Mahaffey running third with Dunlevy fourth and Sibilia fifth.
With five laps to go Oakley still had a commanding lead and when Don
Beddies waved the checker it was Oakley and his Oakley Blacktop special
claiming his first ever late model feature win. Braden, in his first
start in the Gary Estes owned machine was second with last years track
champ Don Mahaffey third. Dick Dunlevy was fourth and fifth was Bob
Sibila.
For the modified feature it was Jason Mahaffey and former winner Derek
Weatherhead leading the tweleve car field for the green with Mahaffey
taking the lead followed by Weatherhead and fast timer Greg Stapleton.
Stapleton was on the move, pulling alongside and passing Weatherhead on
lap six. He then went after leader Mahaffey moving to the outside only
to have to back off as they passed a slower car. Lap tweleve had
Stapleton again pulling up beside Mahaffey as they battled for the front
spot. Lap sixteen showed Stapleton the leader which he held. Meanwhile
back in the pack former winner Ryan Fleming was riding fourth and Bill
Burba fifth.
The pace was slowed on lap twenty five and when action resumed
Stapleton continued to set the pace claiming his first win of the season
with Jason Mahaffey secod followed by Derek Weatherhead, Ryan Fleming,
and Bill Burba.
Bob Sibila and Don Mahaffey led the first heat of the late models
field to the green with Mahaffey taking the lead followed by Sibilia and
rookie late model driver Brandon Oakley only to have the field slowed
when Dick Dunlevy stopped at the track exit. When the checker waved it
was Mahaffey the winner folowed by Bob Sibila, Travis Braden and Oakley.
Russ Bobb and Terry Scherz started in the front row of the second heat
with veteran Bobb taking the lead as Bobby Justus challenged him on the
outside as Bobb kept shaking him off. Bobb took the win by a fender with
Justus second followed byShawn Stansell and Terry Scherz.
The first heat of the modifieds had Rob Garrett and Ryan Fleming in the
front row and it was Fleming darting into the ead with Garrett and Brad
Williams in tow. When the checker waved it was that order with Greg
Stapleton fourth.
It was Jeff Smith and Rodney Kreusch in the front row of the second
heat with Kreusch taking off to a commanding lead with Jerry Stapleton
taking second followed by Bill Burba who advanced to challenge
Stapleton. It was Kreusch claiming the win with Stapleton, Burba, and
Aaron Pippin fourth.
First night winner Mike South Jr. sat on the pole of the sport stock
feature with Travis Digges alongside and when the green flew the two ran
side by side for the lead. Digges showed as the leader on lap three as
Gordon Watson was trying to pass South when they made contact with
Watson receiving a flat tire, departing to the pits. On the restart
Digges stayed in front when the yellow flew when Shawn Stansell spun on
lap seven to slow the pace. Behind the front running Digges and South
was Josh Longstreth and Richard Roush. Again the yellow flew when Digges
spun on turn one by himself and was delegated to the tail.
Now Mike South found himself in the lead with Longstreth second and
here came Shawn Stansell from the rear to challenge Longstreth for
second making his pass good and then it was South who Stansell was
after. Lap fourteen showed Stansell in command and further back Digges
was dicing with Richard Roush for fourth.
It was Stansell taking his second straight feature win with Mike South
Jr. second, Josh Longstreth third, Travis Digges fourth, and Richard
Roush fifth.
Josh Longstreth and Shawn Stansell started in the front row of the
sport stock heat as Mike South Jr. and Shawn Stansell batted for second
with South taking the spot. Travis Digges moved into third and then
pulled alongside South on the white flag lap but when the checker waved
it was Longstreth taking the win followed by South, Digges, and
Stansell.
Robert Roush and Tyler Mahaffey were the pacesetters in the second
heat and it was Richard Rousch taking the win with Mahaffey second and
Robert Roush third.
A fine field of compacts made the call for the twenty lap feature with
Gary Williams and heat winner Matt Stone setting the pace with a three
car battle developing for the lead between the two and Kevin Flynn.
Flynn took the lead with Williams not far behind and here came two time
winner Bo Hoelscher on the prowl to move up behind third place running
Flynn and then was looking for a way to catch second place running
Williams only to see the caution come out. The top five were Stone,
Williams, Hoelscher, Flynn, and Joe Hoelscher.
Stone, who had placed second in the previous two features was looking
for a win to celebrate Friday the 13th and was not about to give up the
front spot. A happy Stone claimed his first win with Williams second,
Bo Hoelscher third, Joe Hoelscher fourth after smacking the wall just
before the checker and fifth was Kevin Flynn.
It was Paul Holley and Bryan Lynch in the front row of the first
compact eat with Holley taking the lead with Kevin Flynn flying on the
outside to steal it leaving Holley behind who in turn was challenged by
Matt Stone who took over second and then went after leader Flynn. Stone
slipped inside of Flynn with one lap to go to take the win with Flynn
second followed by Holley and Joe Hoelscher.
Steve Barnhart and Dustin Smith paced the second heat field with
Barnhart taking the lead which was short lived as Smith took command.
Davey Shaw then passed Barnhart for second as Jess Drook moved into
third. Smith took the win and it was Shaw second, Drook third, and Ron
Sagers fourth.
The IKO Minicups faced twenty five laps in their feature that had Trey
Craig and Corey Deuser in the front row. Craig took the lead with Deuser
riding a close second, trying to work the outside lane but it was Craig
maintaining the lead. At the checker it was Craig, Deuser, Jacob McClay
and Amanda Harrison.
